6 Team Lunch Places in Chennai

Few things brighten up the drudgery of a tough work week than a team lunch. Apart from giving you a respite from carrying your own ‘dabba’ to work, or hitting the local grease spoon down the road for a quick bite, team lunches are ideal to kick back with your colleagues and truly catch up. It’s also an opportunity to retire from office politics, however temporarily, put aside tensions and dig into something scrumptious. It also helps ‘coz it’s the boss paying the bill!

1. Sigree:

An old favourite, Sigree, with its two locations is conveniently located near the commercial districts of Nungambakkam and Adyar. Specializing in North West Frontier cuisine, what’s best about Sigree is its massive unlimited lunch buffet that offers great choices for both vegetarians and non- vegetarians. A wide variety of soups, salads, starters, drinks, main course dishes and desserts are great value for money and are sure to keep your team well- fed and productive. The starters and the non- veg kebabs are particularly popular with customers. The biryani is another favourite. For large groups, a prior reservation is recommended. Offering delicious burgers, sandwiches, paninis, fries and shakes, they’re what everybody is raving about. Located in the heart of the city just off Cenotaph Road,   they boast of great food, cheerful service, peppy interiors and a few surprises in the presentation of their food. The Epic Burger, the ‘Big Boy Veggie Platter’ and the ‘Chili cheese Fries’ seem to be getting rave reviews. 3. Absolute Barbecue:

Another fantastic place that accommodates a whole variety of palates and preferences is Absolute Barbecue. An eye- popping variety of grilled vegetables, fruits (yes!), meats and seafood greet you on arrival. The main course, drinks and desserts keep up in their diversity as well. Their ‘wish grill’ is a huge crowd puller where you get to create your own dish incorporating your favourite meats, veggies, sauces and toppings with rice or noodles. A delectable range of desserts is available to top off our meal, if you have any room left! As the new grill in town, they are pretty booked up, so you will need to make reservations up to a week in advance. But the food should be worth the wait for you and your office group! 4. Mainland China:

When the vote in the team favours chopsticks, Mainland China is your sure bet for a great meal. Conveniently located, they have four outlets in Anna Nagar, Velachery, Alwarpet and OMR. Simple, elegant interiors, decent service and some classic Chinese food make it great choice for an executive lunch, whether the group be big or small. The valet service is an added bonus. They have both a la carte and buffet options for lunch. The buffet is great value for money with a big spread which both vegetarians and non- vegetarians will enjoy. 5. Maplai:

When you wanna go the authentic South India way, the place to be at is Maplai on Sterling Road. You can be sure to find some dishes that were part of your grandma’s repertoire of South Indian cooking! Especially recommended are the Karukku murukku vendakkai, Thanjavur Kair Katti Gola,Crispy Guntur Corn, Paneer Pepper Fry, Ayire Meen Kuzambe, Nadan Mutton Curry, Coin and Malabar Barotta, Mushroom Chettinadu and  Kofta Biryani. They have a host of refreshing drinks from the deep South including Madurai Jigarthanda, Panagam, Nannari smoothie, Skandasheikh that are a must try. Karupatti Misu and the 3 Way Vattalappam are great twists on conventional South Indian desserts that complete your meal. Just be ready for a nap after your meal though! Meal for two: Rs. 800

6. Jonah’s Bistro:

If in the area, Jonah’s Bistro with its two locations in Alwarpet and Velachery is a worthwhile stop for a quick office lunch. Exceptional service distinguishes this particular restaurant as it dishes out some delicious Italian fare. Chef Willi (of Kryptos and Tuscana fame) has devised a creative menu with some outstanding thin- crust pizzas, burgers, snacks, soups and steak. They also take particular pride in their desserts, some of which are supplied by the famous Baker Street from Pondicherry. Dishes that must not be missed include the Brit Pizza, the Sizzling from Sicily Pizza loaded with fresh mozzarella, Calamari Fritters, the Mushroom Soup and all of their pastas. The Meatball Lasagna and the Tenderloin steak deserve a special mention for their popularity. Among desserts, highly voted are the Hungarian Apple Pancakes, the Dark Chocolate Mousse and Chef Willi’s Tiramisu. Meal for two: Rs. 1000
