Weiner Schnitzel, Austria’s National Dish

Heard of Weiner Schnitzel? ‘Weiner’ literally means Viennese(from Vienna) in German. Weiner Schnitzel was created and perfected by the Austrians who proudly claim this as their national dish. It is one of the most popular dishes known to any German and found at any German restaurant. The Wiener Schnitzel, by definition, is made with veal. However, today many German restaurants offer a Schnitzel using different meats while still following the preparation techniques of the Wiener Schnitzel i.e. pounding meat to thin slices, dipping them in flour, egg, and bread crumbs, and frying in butter or oil till they turn to a beautiful golden brown color. These kinds of preparations are sometimes also called the ‘Wiener Art’, meaning it was prepared like a Wiener Schnitzel, but the meat is not veal.
