If you happen to have lived somewhere in the Middle East, there’s no chance of you missing out on Shawarma, Hummus & pita. One of the most popular among the Middle Eastern cuisines is the Shawarma and it is possibly the only food from that cuisine that’s widely available in Chennai. Its hard to point out one place in Chennai that exclusively serves this cuisine except Kefi at the Taj Club House. But that’s no longer true now with the launch of Mezze in Chennai. Mezze has brought to Chennai a tradition and heritage from the lands of the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Mezze is originally a Lebanese tradition that dates back 1800 years. Mezze is more about a culture than it is about food. It’s about socializing and sharing a meal at a table. A Mezze styled dining unites people at a table laid with small plates of cold and hot appetizers from the Middle Eastern cuisine. Appetizers would be a small word as the combination of cold and hot mezzes served with grills, desserts and drinks ends up making a complete meal.
Being named after this tradition, Mezze in Chennai is true to it in word and in spirit. It has a mezze styled dining in place with its chic décor, huge table with seating for 12 and an array of cold and hot mezzes to relax, relish and bond with friends & family.
The love for Mezze styled food got Anush Rajasekaran & Swetha Rengasamy to bring this food to Chennai. And the place was apt for this, says Anush. Swetha, a graduate from Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland is the In-House Chef who curates the menu. Anush & Swetha are hands on with their diners, enthusiastically briefing them about what the food is all about.
Anush took us through this tradition of small plated food. The menu isn’t too elaborate but is packed with the right flavors from Morocco, Turkey & Lebanon.
